Polish favourites
In the story, Joseph has a Polish granny. She makes Pierogi for him to take to the celebration after the school concert. Pierogi are a traditional Polish dish. They are made from dough which can be filled with different types of filling. Traditional fillings can include spinach, cheeze or meat.
Other Polish favourite foods include: Bigos (or hunter’s stew) and Borscht (a clear spicy soup)
Somali favourites
include a type of homemade bread called anjara (it looks like a large, spongy pancake); spaghetti with ground meat in a sauce – Somalis traditionally eat goat. Also much liked are chicken suqar (a stew of diced chicken, green peppers, onions, carrots, celery, and a few chunks of potato, not very spicy, but with black cardamom seeds) sambuse (stuffed pastries especially popular during Ramadan with meat or vegetables).
British favourites
The traditional British favourite is Sunday Roast with Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy. But very little tastes as good as fried fish and chips – wrapped in newspaper.
Also traditional is triffle - known in France as Creme Anglaise and Italy as Zuppa Ingles. A proper English trifle is make with real egg custard poured over sponge cake soaked in fruit and sherry and topped with whipped cream.
Other favourites
In real life, Joseph’s other granny is from Guyana. A big favourite in Guyana is Banana bread.

My Friend Jamal - Food from around the World
So many people from around the world come to live in the UK and bring their traditional foods with them. This means that in the UK, not only do we have traditional English favourites, but food from all over. We have come to love some of these foods so much that they are some of the most popular things we eat.
Pizza and pasta are big favourites. Curries and ‘Balti’ from India and Bengal (as well as some which have been ‘invented’ here in England like tikka masala) are hugely popular, as are various Chinese dishes like Chou Mein and Chop Suey dishes. British people have also fallen in love with jerk chicken and patties from the Caribbean
